Transactional email

From an application just getting started to a product that keeps growing.
One event, one message, one clear journey
A straightforward definition
A transactional email is a message sent as a consequence of a user action or an event related to their account or a service. Its purpose is to deliver specific information the person needs: confirming an operation, regaining access, or receiving an important update.
Unlike promotional email, it is not normally part of a marketing campaign. An email being triggered automatically does not make it transactional by itself: its content and purpose matter.
Not every email tells a long story. Some simply need to arrive at the right moment.
Messages people expect
Confirm that an order was recorded and share the details the person needs to review.
Send a link or instructions so someone can regain access to their account.
Deliver one-time codes used to confirm an action or sign in.
Share a record of a completed payment or transaction.
Notify people about relevant changes, such as a password change or security update.
Communicate important product events when the content is operational rather than promotional.
Two different purposes
Both arrive by email, but they serve different needs.
| Aspect | Transactional email | Email marketing |
|---|---|---|
| Reason | A specific action or event | A campaign or commercial communication |
| Content | Operational or account information | Promotions, news, and offers |
| Recipient | The person connected to the event | An audience or contact segment |
| Example | Resetting a password | Announcing a discount |
Destinatarium focuses on transactional email: the messages that accompany important actions in your product. The legal classification of each message also depends on its content and the applicable rules.

Sending is integrated through code, but understanding the journey of your emails should not require specialist knowledge.
Before you press send
Authenticate your domain. Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC according to the platform guidance and your domain policies.
Use recognizable senders. Help people identify who is writing to them.
Make every message useful. Get straight to the purpose of the email and avoid mixing operational information with unnecessary promotions.
Take care with links and content. Use legitimate, clear, and secure destinations.
Review sending statuses. A message accepted for processing is not necessarily one delivered to the inbox.
